She was a bit of a douche in thanking God for saving her kid, and not even saying anything remorseful about that beautiful animal that got shot so her kid could live, but calling her a shitty mom is overkill, IMO.

Why does thanking God make her a douche? She believes in God, so it makes sense that she would mention Him. How does this make her a douche??

Did she give a shout-out to the team that saved her child's life? If so, not a douche.

RE: Gorilla killed
I must admit, when I first heard the story, my first response was to feel infuriated at the mom. I even went on a bit of a rant on a facebook friend's post, about how much of an idiot the mom was... as I have a super soft spot for animals. But now, I just feel bad for her. She's getting so much crap, and even death threats. Apparently, this is something that happened really quick. In the perfect world, her eyes would have been glued to the child at all times, but no one is perfect, and one moment of bad judgement shouldn't subject anyone to so much hateful backlash. I think it is very possible it could have happened to anyone. I think watching her child being dragged around by a 450 lbs gorilla for over 10 minutes was punishment enough for her.

She most certainly did, both times.

“We are so thankful to the Lord that our child is safe. He is home and doing just fine. We extend our heartfelt thanks for the quick action by the Cincinnati Zoo staff. We know that this was a very difficult decision for them, and that they are grieving the loss of their gorilla.”

"We continue to praise God for His grace and mercy, and to be thankful to the Cincinnati Zoo for their actions taken to protect our child. Some have offered money to the family, which we do not want and will not accept," the family said. "If anyone wishes to make a gift, we recommend a donation to the Cincinnati Zoo in Harambe's name."

Because if there were a god, could it not have told the gorilla to leave the kid alone? Or kept the kid from falling into the pit in the first place?  Instead, the poor caged gorilla was killed.  So, "Thank god the gorilla was killed and I can continue to be an idiot"?

So basically you're saying believing in God makes someone a douche.

I think both sides of this discussion have good points.

The enclosure was clearly insufficient. Cynical though it might sound, relying on visitors to be intelligent and responsible -- yes, even with their own children -- strikes me as a bit naive.

At the same time, being a distracted parent does indeed come with the territory at times. It shouldn't have happened in a place like this, where the dangers of inattention ought to have prompted heightened alertness.

I'm glad the child is okay, and sad the gorilla is dead.

It's a shame Harambe didn't act the same way. Sad  I'm sure gorillas, like humans, have all varying types of personalities.

RE: Gorilla killed
I say put people and animals on level ground with each other and maybe 'pin in' the animals with those invisible fence collars they put on dogs and let nature/evolution weed some of you morons out. Then maybe make yearly "zoo" visits all mandatory for the first 18 years of every kids life, with varying degrees of freedom for the children until the last year the 'child' is made to go through on his own.

If the kid can navigate the gauntlet of animals with out being mauled or outright eaten then he/she becomes a full voting citizen, with all the rights and privileges there of. the rest be made to go and build the south ward facing side of the Mexico/Us wall.

That's basic evolution right? survival of the fittest?

If nothing else it will eliminate reality Tv, 15 dollar an hour hamburger flipper jobs, and any 'which bathroom' to use confusion one may have.

Kinda like how the Spartans did things.

RE: Gorilla killed
It is hard for humans to comprehend how flimsy they are compared to an adult gorilla (or a juvenile, for that matter). The silverback was acting agitated and dominating, not protective. Gorillas are perfectly capable of being gentle to their own young and, as a rule, don't drag them around like old dolls. This one was exhibiting behavior that typically leads to violently throwing things around, destroying scenery, and chest thumping. The child could have been maimed or killed instantly at any point.
