Although I wanted out and I am glad we are out I think you are probably right ....

The betting odds where 2/1 to 3/1 against Brexit and most pollsters plus most leave/remain voters fully expected a remain vote ...

This will have lead to many remain voters staying at home out of false confidence while most leave voters would have been out to make their vote count ...

The people who didn't vote don't care one way or the other.

I was just reading that there's been a surge in Google searches about Irish citizenship and passports following the referendum result, and the Irish Foreign Ministry has responded by publishing a guide on their website HERE. And according to that, since one of my parents was born in Ireland, that makes me automatically an Irish Citizen, despite being born in the UK, and therefore entitled to apply for an Irish Passport. I didn't know anything about that till now so it looks like there's a light at the end of this tunnel after all

I understand that leaving the EU is a 2 year process.

I understand that leaving the EU is a 2 year process.

Here's how I see it:

The referendum was non-binding in the first place. That means the government doesn't have to actually leave the EU.

Now, the Prime Minister has said he will respect the will of the people, but he's also resigning, and that may trigger a general election in the near future.

If there's enough of a backlash against the vote, and it looks like the public actually want to stay in the EU, then this may become a political play for that election. Certainly, Labour didn't want to leave, and if they ally with the SNP and the Lib Dems, they may be able to gain a majority and stop the process.

I don't see that being very likely, but then plenty of unlikely things have happened this year politically.

People that don't vote don't give a damn about the results and they don't matter.  

Besides, unless the rules state otherwise the side that gets 50% + 1 is the winner.  So if the pool of available voters is 50 million and only 50 bother to vote the side that gets 26 or more is the winner.

The weather was particularly poor across the UK, meaning a lot of people couldn't get out to vote. There are many reasons why people do not, or cannot vote.
