I'm actually a huge fan of snakes. If someone has a pet one, I'm usually the first one asking for it to come out of the tank so I can hold it. I give wild ones respect and a wide berth, of course.

Until I worked at the nature preserve, I detested snakes. But over the last few years, I've come to appreciate the ecological role they play.

Not much on handling them (the old Baptist in me gets shitty thinking about that Pentecostal shit), but I'm not afraid to get up close to them. As long as you don't fuck with them, they're pretty laid-back.

About two foot from a rattler, and he was a little irked so I backed off:

Ugh. 

Do those thangs just up and run (okay, slither) across the driveway on a regular basis? I only spy around my place a couple of times year, usually just the garter variety, I think. If they're too close to my front door, I'll come from around back and shoot them with a Super-Soaker until they skedaddle.

Yeah, Thena, I looked it up and it's a common garter snake.
My brother has a tree python, non-venomous, but it's still fairly hostile, especially when it's close to feeding time.
I reckon it's bit me fifty times now. It sought of hurts so it gets annoying fairly quick.
I tapped it on the head once after it bit me and that just made it madder.
Lucky my brother didn't see me do it else he would have given me a kick in the arse for it. :-)
