I assume "morally" you should tell a potential partner/significant other about having herpes?

And is kissing/sharing drinks etc fine when not having a cold sore present?

I don't know... Simplex 1 is so incredibly widespread that it's almost redundant. Many people are just lucky enough
to never have any significant outbreaks. I believe any girl you'll kiss is more than 80% likely to have it already.

Step 1: Don't put your mouth on the private parts of anybody.
Step 2: Don't kiss anyone and let them put their mouths on your private parts.

You're fine.

It seems as if it's very easy to spread.

Never share drinks or chapsticks or kisses when they're there. Unless the other person already gets cold sores in which case it won't really matter

Define private parts? I don't consider mouths to be private but I do think you should avoid kissing when you have a cold sore. Private parts....sigh

So if I don't have the sores what's the risk of passing on the disease to someone else by kissing, sharing drinks etc? Anyone knows?

I was about to say the same thing.  Oral herpes is INCREDIBLY common.  I read a statistic some where (don't quote me for accuracy here) that close to 90% of individuals will have contracted it by the time they reach late adulthood.  It doesn't mean you were making out with someone's herped out genitals.   Tongue

Yup, I read it's 85%. As I said above, warning a partner about having Simplex type 1 is almost redundant. If you kiss someone, you simply have to assume by default that they have it. If you've had contact with three people, your chance is like 99.9% of having been exposed to it.
What you *should not* do is have oral sex during an oral herpes outbreak. Genital herpes is usually Simplex type 2, but I've read that type 1 increasingly appears as a genital infection.

I don't think it passes when you don't have a sore but I'm not positive. Odds are, most everyone you know already gets them anyway.
