That's scary.
Catholics infested my family...I mean...I married one.

What's happening?
Probably maturing.
You're probably right.

Believe me, and I say that in all seriousness, they will change more and more when getting older. At the very latest with landing a job. I guess that will be the point where you no longer will fall for any rightwing snake oil vendor. Unless your parents are filthy rich and you don't have to work for a living, that is.

Fine. If a police captain orders his constables to frighten children by threatening their parents, is it wrong to criticize the orders?

Please, give me a break. Are you now in the camp of the knife in teeth atheists who want to regulate the believes of people that totally don't concern us for the heck of it?
IT DOESN't CONCERN US, nor the world at large. It's a religious rule, like jewish or muslim burial rites. Or Hindu, mabye the Spaghetti monster has one too. Don't know, couldn't care less. It's got no influence on the world, as opposed as your offensive comparison, which very much had an influence on the world.
So, things may be seen as wrong if and only if they have an influence on the world at large?
And I really, REALLY doubt my comparison will any influence on the world whatsoever.
What I don't doubt is that you've gone and got you knickers in a twist over something utterly trivial.

Utterly trivial for you maybe. But not for someone who's lost about 80 percent of his family in the real deal. It's not utterly trivial for me. It's stupid and offensive, since it doesn't even come close to this much ado about nothing over burial rites.

Why? They're the most harmless bunch of them all. No political or social clout, their own followers not being very much invested for their largest parts. It's more of a traditional thing for most of them, according to polls. And you know what you get, even when dealing with hardcore catholics, since the pope calls the shots. And the pope, as opposed to evangelical pastors, doesn't call for homicide. This is much ado about nothing. It's just about burial ceremonies for catholics if they are inclined to follow what's coming from Rome.
I always keep saying, I'm comfortable with a catholic having access to nuclear launch codes. I don't extend the same trust to evangelicals, since they are all about end times. Catholics are not.
If I had to choose someone based on their religion for that role, I'd go with a Jain over anything else.

Catholic fatwa's. And some Catholics wonder why they're laughed at.
Addressing the bickering, I think those that treat this as a simply voluntary organization with rules accepted or denied by consenting adults underestimate the influence of the church in hanging a reservation in hell over the heads of its devout with this type of shit. Boru is correct in his estimation of the abject lack of concern the church has with the emotional well being of its flock.
I think there's also a lack of consideration for Catholic majority nations turning this into the law of the land. Might want to seek out a Pole if your confused about my meaning.
Tolerance of illiberal principles is indicative of the regressive left. This type of religious based bullshit deserves all the derision and ridicule one can muster.

You're still not getting it. See my reply to abaris.
Suppose a Catholic couple have been married 50 years, the husband dies. The wife has him cremated and keeps his urn at home. It's what she remembers him by, it keeps her connected to him, and helps her through the hard, lonely times she endures without the man she spend most of her life with. And then the Pope, the Vicar of Christ on Earth, tells her that by keeping this anchor of solace in her home she is a sinner.
Not all atrocities are physical.

Boru, she is choosing to listen to the Pope, so she shouldn't have a problem doing so. If she does, she can always stop doing it.

That's an oversimplification if I've ever heard one.

I agree with this. It's when people do more destabilizing and violent things, or try and base policy on idiotic religious ideas that I get my panties all in a bunch. The rest of the time, I stopped caring about the rituals and what have you.
I wonder if this change in attitude has anything to do with my treatment here on this forum.
