it goes without saying that you will choose an externall hard drive or a flash drive or a DVD if you decide to install anything
whatever doesn't kill me only makes me stronger

If so, yes a CD/DVD or a USB flash drive would be required. Alternatively, you could install it on an external hard drive instead. Whatever works for you. I'm going to apologize in advance because I'm going to pick on you a little bit here. Anytime we ask others for advice, we need to consider the source. You're giving some fairly poor advice here and what'd ya know, you are no longer using windows 10 and had to roll back to 8. The science and art of keeping computers at optimum performance levels is complex. But the core concepts are often incredibly simple. Let me illustrate. What is the absolute simplest way to keep a computer running as fast as the day it was born for the next 30 years. Simple. Install the operating system, don't install anything else ever and don't connect it to the internet ever. Now obviously such a machine would have extremely limited utility. But 30 years from now you could power it up and it would still be just as fast as it was the day it was born. And it also illustrates one of the core concepts of keeping machines running fast. Keep it as clean possible. Install as little as possible. And definitely only install high quality commercial apps whenever possible. The idea of freeware is great. But the reality is most of it isn't free nor is most of it well written nor is most of it safe. And the idea of advising someone to install a freeware app in order to find a piece of information about their system that 30 seconds of googling could also reveal just as easily is.... well not the best idea. Like I said, I apologize for picking on you. I know you have nothing but good intentions. But installing more software, especially freeware, is the last thing you want to do on a machine that is already having performance issues.
Get an SSD. Install Windows 10 on that, and you will never feel the issue of 'slowness' ever again.

Lately it seems to be running slower and slower and is becoming frustrating to work with . . . . . . It's a feature. Enjoy !
