I'm sure it depends on what kind of writer you are. But earning a living with creative writing is almost always a struggle.

Oh, sure. If you're only going to do creative writing, you've backed yourself into a corner. You will have to get a day job, get famous or mass produce ebooks at a rate that makes it statistically impossible not to sell any at all.

I do all kinds of writing. I've done research copy, which is really interesting. I write blog posts for people on any number of topics and only those that interest me personally. I write travel copy on places I've visited. I write retail copy, which pays the best and is the most consistent flow of income. I've written and published three horror novels and a children's book. I'm currently writing two short story collections and a historical fiction novel set in Revolutionary Boston.

A lot of writers make writing about writing their bread and butter. I think it's a cop-out if the only thing you're selling is what you sell to other writers. How are you telling people how to be a successful writer if your only audience is other writers? Still, there's money to be had in that as well.

There are only a handful of people making real money in poetry. If you write poetry, good fucking luck.
