No.

The end:  World peace
The means: Universal genocide

You have a young daughter. She is kidnapped, raped and killed. You know who did it but you don't have any evidence. Court rules the culprit not guilty due to lack of evidence. You kill the person.

End: Justice
Means: Murder

Does the "end does not justify the means" hold any water here?

Edit: It is again an extreme scenario. However, if we all reflect on our own actions and general attitude we find a pattern of what philosophy we mostly prefer.

That is a particularly contrived example using an arbitrarily narrow view of “end”.

Yes, and I can just as easily provide a non-contrived example to illustrate that the means must be weighed against the ends to make the determination as to justification.

How do we even answer without a specific scenario. All I can say is sometimes.

What are the other options for justifying means, besides ends?
I'm not anti-Christian. I'm anti-stupid.

If you cook spaghetti because you want something to eat then the end definitely justifies the means Wink

That isn't really a question you can be so broad with.

A murderer is caught by civilians and tortured to death. The ends are a bad person died and good riddance. Is taking the law into your own hands and being the judge, jury, and executioner justifying the means?

You spend way more money than you should have and will have to suffer later is considered the ends but you have a trip of a lifetime and wouldn't trade it for anything else. It would go to say it is worth it.

Yes, the ends always justify the means.  Who cares about anyone else, so long as I get what I want?

4 answers:

* What type of person are you?
I'm the type of person who gets what I want.

* What do you think of people with the opposite view?
They're expendable.

* Can you maintain a good relation with someone with the opposite or same view?
No, they're all expendable.

* What do you most love and hate about your view and the opposite view?
Their expendability
