No evidence to support link between violent video games and behavior

Summary: Researchers have found no evidence to support the theory that video games make players more violent.Researchers at the University of York have found no evidence to support the theory that video games make players more violent.

In a series of experiments, with more than 3,000 participants, the team demonstrated that video game concepts do not 'prime' players to behave in certain ways and that increasing the realism of violent video games does not necessarily increase aggression in game players.
The dominant model of learning in games is built on the idea that exposing players to concepts, such as violence in a game, makes those concepts easier to use in 'real life'.
This is known as 'priming', and is thought to lead to changes in behaviour. Previous experiments on this effect, however, have so far provided mixed conclusions.
Researchers at the University of York expanded the number of participants in experiments, compared to studies that had gone before it, and compared different types of gaming realism to explore whether more conclusive evidence could be found.
In one study, participants played a game where they had to either be a car avoiding collisions with trucks or a mouse avoiding being caught by a cat. Following the game, the players were shown various images, such as a bus or a dog, and asked to label them as either a vehicle or an animal.
Dr David Zendle, from the University's Department of Computer Science, said: "If players are 'primed' through immersing themselves in the concepts of the game, they should be able to categorise the objects associated with this game more quickly in the real world once the game had concluded.
"Across the two games we didn't find this to be the case. Participants who played a car-themed game were no quicker at categorising vehicle images, and indeed in some cases their reaction time was significantly slower."

Actually, shooting and stabbing pixels makes me less prone to shooting and stabbing people. You know. Blowing off some steam.

I hate stories like this.

Marketing works, otherwise nothing would sell. Not a video game, not a burger, not a economic ideology, not a political party, not a politician, not a religion. If marketing didn't work we would NOT have the fucking asshole in the White House we do now.

It is TRUE that you cannot blame a video game. But we still have ratings for not just video games, but movies as well. Just like you can't sell porn to a 5 year old. Just like big tobacco was bitch slapped for lying about it's addiction and it's marketing to minorities and youth.

I wonder who funded this study. Corporate America has FOREVER created junk "studies". BIG OIL is a prime example. It spent tons of money to keep lead in gas. It does the same thing today promote climate change denial.

I did Call of Duty in 1970. It was definitely more realistic then, but I did notice I was tending to shoot people with .50s more often than I did in high school back in Indiana.

And some of the fuckers in HS definitely needed shooting.

Your real service is not the issue. But even with now a voluntary service, there is a reason they have to "recruit". And how is that done? Just like McDonalds, the federal budget has to pay for adds on TV that sell the idea of the nobility of service. Again, if marketing didn't work, no idea or product would sell.

People who think there's no relation between violence and video games have never watched gamers 'discussing' the relative merits of PlayStation vs Xbox.

Pop culture only has the influence one allows it to. Just like there are Pro Soccer fans and Pro NHL fans and Pro NFL fans and Pro College football fans, whom are not violent, while others do get violent, either at a bar or at the stadium. How many riots do we see after sporting events?

AGAIN, marketing works for EVERYTHING, be it a video game, be it a sport, be it a product, be it a economic view, be it a political party, or a religion.

It isn't to say everyone who buys the marketing will get violent, just to say that some, even if a minority cant tell the difference between marketing and reality.

You are easily the most humour-impaired person I've ever met, either online or IRL.

Text is harder to interpret than voice or video. Which is why emotocons help.  Tongue

But regardless of your sarcasm, my statement stands.
