Here's three very different pieces of music I recently discovered to bring up.
This music itself isn't a recent discovery, per se, since I've been interested in Meat Loaf for over a decade (around Super Bowl 2007, to be precise), but I recently discovered what "that" is, that Meat Loaf won't do for love. It turns out it's hidden in plain sight in the lyrics, but because A) it changes from verse to verse, and B) Jim Steinman's songs are long and convoluted and this being no exception, it took Meat Loaf explaining it with a blackboard to show people what it is: I recently decided to audit the local library's music collection to see if there was anything else worth listening to there. Turns out, after sifting through over 4,000 listings, searching Allmusic to narrow it down to the ones that A) seem interesting, and B) have reasonably complete discographies available at the library, and C) "thin-slicing" the ones that did with Youtube videos, there's still quite a bit. One of the most interesting ones is this retro project by Chad Gilbert of Newfound Glory: Ironically, Newfound Glory itself failed the "reasonably complete" test. And, listening to "Hit and Miss," it failed the "thin-slicing" test, because I can only assume that Green Day and The Offspring have raised the pop-punk bar that fucking high. Also, I finally started listening to Godspeed You Black Emperor. I picked it to stream at the candy store on a lark since I didn't know what to do at this point, especially since my first choice was King Crimson, and Robert Fripp has a dickish attitude towards posting his music on Youtube to create new fans, so that was no longer an option. Fortunately, this turned out to be totally epic. I have since streamed all of their albums at work.
