Watched Black Panther recently, and wondered about the viability of former colonies' achieving competent self-rule. Specifically, I live in a former colony where it would appear that the colonists did everything right (at least from their perspective): the native people were almost completely wiped out multiple times and have almost no political power, and it's been so profitable that it's been the nation with the biggest economy since the Gilded Age. By all estimates, we are responsible for a little less than a quarter of the world's GDP.
And yet, after thinking it over for a year and a half, we still decided the best choice for our leader was a wrestling heel with a platform that came straight out of Dostoevsky's Demons. Our legislature is so polarised that it's been virtually impossible to get a law of any importance for nigh on a decade. Evidently, even with all the things in our favour, this former colonial power appears to be incapable of self-government. Should we try to petition 10 Downing Street to take America back or should we wait until Jeremy Corbyn comes to power?
