Your friend,

Happy Thanksgiving to you, too.

To whom should I be thankful?
Boru
You can be thankful for without being thankful to. I am thankful for my friends and let them know it. And the food is damn good.

Yeah, I really don't think you can. To be thankful implies gratitude or appreciation, and it's hard to see how to accomplish that without an object.

Hmmm. I am grateful for and appreciative of my friends, and they're not objects.

Your friends are non-corporeal? Are these imaginary friends? Everything physical is an object.
But that’s as may be. I was using ‘object’ in the grammatical sense. When you express thanks, you have to be thanking something.

But if you’re thanking your friends, you’re being thankful ‘to’ them, not ‘for’ them.

Boru
Depends on what one is being thankful for?
For being alive, that would be one's mommy and daddy, I suppose.
Ultimately, that would Mother Nature. Mom's the best.

Being thankful to them or for them makes no difference to me. We can make Turkey day whatever we want. Rather than having any religious connotations, I just enjoy the day with friends.
