But those who do don't all believe in the same god or how to worship the ones they DO share a belief in.

The people who are causing the ugliness in religion- the less than 1% of "religious" people are not even really religious. They are just using religion as an excuse to do horrible things and they do not even believe in God. Anyone who believes in God would follow God's commandments. They are the same 10 commandments for Jewish people, Christians, Catholics and Muslims.
