We’re already starting to see the effects of vaping on people. In the US in the past few months there have been a number of people admitted to hospital for vaping related illnesses along with at least one death.

Overweight people can and do get refused treatment, including cardiac treatment, because of their weight.

Why should smokers be given special treatment?

Overweight people are denied treatment because of their weight? In what way? That sounds messed up. Where?

I know of cases where the doctor told his patient to "come back when you've lost fifty pounds."

I've heard that nicotine is the most addictive drug in the world and that the success rate for quitting is not good.
If your average smoker has been paying for cigarettes all their life, the chances are they're not financially secure.
If denied treatment due to affordability, they won't be tossed into the street.
They'll still take up a hospital bed during the palliative stages.
It would be more realistic to use the taxes on tobacco to fund addiction related research, in my opinion.
Instead, governments use projected outcomes of tobacco taxes to balance their budget and plan for roads and infrastructure.
It seems a bit evil.
My perception is a little different to the non-smokers here so I can see how it might seem like I'm playing the victim.
But I see fat people as victims also.
Not many people want to be fat or a smoker.
And guilt has never been a good motivator towards better health.

Never even started smoking, but I know it's an expensive habit.

Yeah, but we have lower wages here. The minumum wage is 580 euros per month.

Otoh the cost of living is less than the us as other stuff like food and clothing are cheaper.

I quit cold turkey (2.5-3 packs a day) Oct. 1, 1988, 7 AM. Never smoked again. It was ... nasty. Every day I said "I'll have to go through all this again if I go back to smoking."

Being hard-headed is sometimes an advantage.

I get that. I quit heroin on the 25th november 2004. After a few tries before, always cold turkey. Its the best way. It wasn't the physical withdrawal that posed a threat, its about a week of pain and misery, but sustainable IMHO.

I smoke about 5-10 fags, hand rolled per day. Tried a few times, but failed. I am not dead yet
