What do cigarettes cost?

If your average smoker has been paying for cigarettes all their life, the chances are they're not financially secure.
If denied treatment due to affordability, they won't be tossed into the street.
They'll still take up a hospital bed during the palliative stages.
It would be more realistic to use the taxes on tobacco to fund addiction related research, in my opinion.
Instead, governments use projected outcomes of tobacco taxes to balance their budget and plan for roads and infrastructure.
It seems a bit evil.
My perception is a little different to the non-smokers here so I can see how it might seem like I'm playing the victim.
But I see fat people as victims also.
Not many people want to be fat or a smoker.
And guilt has never been a good motivator towards better health.

It's clearly addictive but as a former meth user I can assure you it is not the most addictive. I agree with this though. I'm uncomfortable with the idea of the system essentially punishing people for their choice to smoke or get fat, as if all the smokers and all the fatties are walking around very proud of themselves.

Making a person liable for their smoking and giving them Healthcare only on their own expense seems far fetched.
It may be a choice to start smoking, either you didn't know what you were getting into or you were already addicted on second hand smoke, the latter being pretty hard to put on the person's ability too chose not to smoke. I can say that even after a month of smoking you are already hooked and it is not easy to quit.
Denning someone a privilege that everyone has jus for one bad choice is to harsh in my opinion. As somebody mentioned early, government are taking billions in taxes from smokers yearly soo the cost could be covered by that.

I started smoking as a teenager, the legendary "peer pressure". Ads still said "Doctors recommend..." and there were only a few rumbles about weeds actually being bad for you.

I was about thirteen.
I used to walk to the shop to buy them for Grand dad.
He'd give me one for doing it.
But I have stopped three times before.
No excuse for starting up again.

We all make choices that impact our health and healthcare costs. Not just big choices, but the everyday additive ones....like bad form while lifting or poorly placed ladders.

Then there are environmentals forced on us by external forces.

I doubt that anyone wants a health risk adjuster crawling up our asses, honestly.

IMO, The place to address these sorts of things are public health campaigns, not punitive fines, in effect.

Here 75% of the price of a pack is taxes. They also put images and messages in the packs as to its bad effects, along with a hotline number for conseling on how to stop. The NHS provides free medical tabagic cessation consults. Advertizement of tobacco products is forbidden, along with the prohibition of smoking indoors in all venues, including bars, restaurants, stadiums, etc.

Me? If I am going to do it, gotta be one day in the morning where I throw the pack in the bin, given enough will mustered.

Bout half the price per pack, here. There’s a dollar federal and then states apply their own varying rates.

They cost 6bucks where I’m at.

Interestingly enough, those taxes are always sold with a “cover the healthcare costs” rationale....but the reality is that they largely go to slush funds.

If I found the decent subsitution, I'll stop.

I smoke because of two things:
1-The feeling of nicotene
2-Phsycholgical problems like "depression".

I know that they cause a fortune on a personal level in medical expenses. I have family members who underwent "open heart surgery" and died from a major stroke triggered by cigs.

So they cost life..there is no point calculating the high prices of reviving from a stroke
