In John Varley's Gaea trilogy he put a critter called a smiler in the mix. You can harvest meat off the smiler without killing them, they barely notice it. I wonder why God didn't think of that.

Titan/Wizard/Demon, epic trilogy. I mean, anybody can populate a new world. It takes a special writer to populate an inner tube a thousand klicks across.

I may have found a way out of your ethical dilemma.

Have you ever been to a zoo?  Not a nature preserve or a wildlife sanctuary, but an actual zoo?  A lot of them are pretty horrible.  Animals in steel cages with concrete floors, nothing approaching their natural habitat, horrible food, and poor sanitation.

So - why not bring your gun to the zoo and kill a few of those animals?  A fair number of them are clearly suffering both physical and mental anguish and it seems you'd be doing them a favour.

I think this idea has merit.  You would end the suffering of these poor creatures and wouldn't have to worry about environmental impact.  Give it some serious thought.
