Then why hasn’t it?

edit: I looked it up. Franklin never said that. What he DID say were words to the effect that voters could dispose of public property (including money) in whatever manner they saw fit, including giving it to poor people. He went on to say that if a citizen didn’t like this sort of civil society, he could go and live with savages.

Why do you rail so hard against a UBI? You clearly have some kind of chip on your shoulder about it. Jeez, dude.
I'm not totally convinced it would be a good thing, but I would like to see us as a country give it a try. What catastrophic effects could it possible have?
Really, only a small number of people in the States would honestly need it, so the toughest part would be deciding who to give it to. I mean, are you one of those people who thinks that all homeless folks are just lazy freeloaders?

Wouldn't it be given to everyone in the country, including Trump ie. universally, like in Finland?

Ideally, I would like to see a base income provided for people who actually need it, or people who fall below a certain income level. If you don't want to call that a UBI, then fine, call it by some other name, I don't really care.
Or, if everyone was provided with a UBI, I would hope that individuals would have some sort of ability to opt-out of receiving it if they didn't actually need it.
The entire point is giving people who truly need it an opportunity to have some kind of income, which I believe would prevent a lot of individuals from resorting to crime to obtain money or housing.
Hopefully, we could trust people who do not need it to opt-out, or maybe choose to have the money donated to a charity or something.

It doesn't occur to you that employers would reduce wages expecting people to make the shortfall with UBI?

There would be no reason or need to.

Quote:If," ["the management consultant"] said tersely, “we could for a moment move on to the subject of fiscal policy. . .”
“Fiscal policy!" whooped Ford Prefect. “Fiscal policy!"
The management consultant gave him a look that only a lungfish could have copied.
“Fiscal policy. . .” he repeated, “that is what I said.”
“How can you have money,” demanded Ford, “if none of you actually produces anything? It doesn't grow on trees you know.”
“If you would allow me to continue.. .”
Ford nodded dejectedly.
“Thank you. Since we decided a few weeks ago to adopt the leaf as legal tender, we have, of course, all become immensely rich.”
Ford stared in disbelief at the crowd who were murmuring appreciatively at this and greedily fingering the wads of leaves with which their track suits were stuffed.
“But we have also,” continued the management consultant, “run into a small inflation problem on account of the high level of leaf availability, which means that, I gather, the current going rate has something like three deciduous forests buying one ship’s peanut."
Murmurs of alarm came from the crowd. The management consultant waved them down.
“So in order to obviate this problem,” he continued, “and effectively revalue the leaf, we are about to embark on a massive defoliation campaign, and. . .er, burn down all the forests. I think you'll all agree that's a sensible move under the circumstances."
