I’d feel more optimistic if churches started turning young people away from Trump.

But what produced trump has also turned the much of young people into effete snobbish dandies who deem themselves too good to actually do the necessary good.

20 years from now, if those young people are less dogmatic than the previous generation, they'll be turning against the kind of thinking that empowered Trump. That's an improvement, isn't it?

That's one of the problems with immediate gratification, you sometimes get unintended consequences. They made their bed.
Being told you're delusional does not necessarily mean you're mental.

Absolutely it is. But I think it would be more of an improvement if churches could grow the fuck up and tell the younger members of their flocks, ‘This Trump guy? NOT what Jesus had in mind.’ That way, you’d still get more progressive young people, but you’d also get more progressive churches. Everybody wins.

True.
When it comes to politics, for decades "the church" cared about two things: abortion and gays. If you're against both, they're on your side. Now there's a third issue: muslims. If you hate muslims, "the church" loves you and your candidacy. Adultery, greed, narcissism, incompetence.... none of that matters to them as long as you hate abortion, gays and muslims.

These young people think they are too good to have to get dirty in doing good work. They can’t even bestir themselves to forestall the end of the world If the alternative is Not in their opinion quite milk and honey. They would be fickle and unreliable Constituents that talks loud and does little.

The church didn’t get this influential by being progressive.

The church didn’t really care at all about abortion and gays. What it cared about is issues that can bind the votes of the feeble minded more closely to It’s own enrichment and aggrandizement. That abortion and gays qualified was purely contingent.

And yet a majority of white Christians who attend church every week think Trump was anointed by God.
Quote:to match the national population, we find that among weekly attending whites, over 60% agree that “Donald Trump was anointed by God to become President of the United States.”
Fully 90% of ardent Christian nationalists believe Trump was anointed by God. And worship attendance plays little role in differentiating Christian nationalists. Once they adopt this worldview conflating their religion with the state, they become firmly committed to Trump’s Republican Party. This helps reinforce the idea that Christian nationalism is no general, civil religion-style worldview; it has been stoked specifically to deify God’s Own Party and Trump in particular.

teachings of the Bible are so muddled and self-contradictory that it was possible for Christians to happily burn heretics alive for five long centuries. It was even possible for the most venerated patriarchs of the Church, like St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas, to conclude that heretics should be tortured (Augustine) or killed outright (Aquinas). Martin Luther and John Calvin advocated the wholesale murder of heretics, apostates, Jews, and witches. - Sam Harris, "Letter To A Christian Nation"

https://religioninpublic.blog/2020/10/28...-election/ That's actually part of what the article discusses.
Young, idealistic Christians are disgusted by the fact that the majority of their church is so accepting of a serial adulterer, pathological liar and extreme narcissist. When 90% of your church loves the guy and you are disgusted by him, you can feel uncomfortable and unwelcomed in the congregation. As a consequence, they simply stop attending church.
