Sullenberger!
I remember him well!
Speaking of feats, craziest shit I've personally seen (no claim on craziest shit in toto) was pilots practicing an unpowered "bounce" with helicopters.
I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!

I have always wanted to fly in a helicopter. However, I think I would want to pass on a bouncing one - I'm not entirely sure what it means, but it sounds like something I wouldn't like very much. Autorotation. I wanted to be a pilot too, groundpounding was for points. I just didn't want to pay for lessons, still don't, lol.

Like another poster mention, hole pucker - and that's just for the people in the bird, has to be worse for the pilot.
-and it's normal, it's regular, they all do it, more than once. Have to.

Autorotation is cool, auto gyro is a helicopter whose main rotor is totally unpowered, and rely on aggressive autorotation induced by powerful tractor propeller to actually fly. But it is cool! Much more elegant than a helicopter, which is but a brute that seeks to stay aloft by physically abusing the air with a flail. I just didn't want to pay for lessons, still don't, lol. And it gets even hairier on older style rotors. With modern full articulated heads it is simply building up inertia in the main rotor by dropping with the blades in low positive pitch, increasing head speed - then increasing rotor pitch.and slowing descent as you approch ground - all which can be done with no lateral movement. A fixed pitch - like a Hiller takes a whole lot more finness..... |
