When Walmart marked down all their pistol ammo because the stores were no longer selling it, I bought a personal use amount. I was so stupid. Should have taken out a loan and cleared out every store in town.

Defensive HP that I paid $12.00 a box for was $60.00 a box not long later. If you could find it.

I bought out one store - of Federal 22 LR in the 550 bulk packs - close to 20 years ago. The kid working sporting goods balked... Thought it was illegal to sell that much. I asked for the manager... The manager told the kid - get a cart and help the man to his car with his ammo. Paid $8.96 a box. Still have a couple.

Sold it to the shop I used to work at during the last shortage. $40 a box.

Replaced it at $18 two years ago.( not quite as much).

Keep it in sealed cans - it will last lifetimes.

Essentially - I shoot 22 for free...

I was in the local gun shop the other day to pick up some stuff for my crossbow and happened to spend a few minutes looking at guns.

I noticed that they had a pretty fair number of 22 rifles in stock. It makes sense - because they ran out of cheap 22 ammo last year. Guys won't buy a plinking rifle when ammo isn' t available. Not my problem - I have beaucoup 22 ammo.

So - I am going to pick up a Ruger 10/22 - polymer stock/stainless steel action (they have 4)  - for $349 - well under the MSRP. It will replace my old one (blued/poly) I sold during the last shortage for $300.

Basic economics...

I will pay you $5000 - plus travel and lodging expenses - to go to 37’s house and teach him how to shoot.

In my experience - it' s easier to turn a profit on ammo.

New and unfired is a whole lot easier to prove on a box of 22' s than a NIB rifle.

I’d do it for free, save expenses. I’m also certified with a decade of military experience. 

An armed population is difficult to oppress.

I’m not a big fan of private firearm ownership, but I think if 37 had a modicum of practical instruction, he might not make so many silly arguments.

It’s a long shot, but I’m not averse to chancing my arm.
