Especially when, during the rare points where he talks about the Socialism in his party's name, it comes across as a nothingburger from someone who doesn't understand what words even mean.

Nobody saying anyone should be ashamed of their skin tone. Nobody is claiming today's population is responsible for what happened before they were born. But is extremely important to teach history, including the not so pretty stuff. Thomas Jefferson owned slaves. Our nation was built literally on slave labor. But even after Lincoln wrote the Emancipation Proclamation, the "reconstruction" never did what it was intended to. Whites were still making monuments to those who fought to keep slavery, and blacks were still lynched with impunity for almost another 100 years. Those are not pretty parts of our history, but they must be taught, not to shame or blame, but so that looking forward the next generation will be educated as to not repeat history.

The Jews whom survived the Holocaust wanted their history and record of being brutally oppressed never to be forgotten. The same can be said for American history too. We killed off Native Americans and took their land. Slavery was part of our history. And Chinese migrants whom helped build the railways in to connect the two ends of the country, were also vilified. In WW2 our government rounded up entire innocent Japanese citizens, took their property, and never gave it back after the war. The conditions at these camps as far as weather was brutal. No, we didn't murder them, but we still treated them like shit.

Again, none of those realities I mentioned are meant to shame or guilt. If you like country music, if you like the food of your local, if you like the "southern charm", fine. But that does not mean you get to hide behind "I didn't do it", "I am not a racist". It is extremely important to remember all of history, as to not repeat the horrors of history when we forget or ignore.
