Are Atheists Really Hated in the US?

RE: Are Atheists Really Hated in the US?
I live in "The Buckle of the Bible Belt" (google it)

For a while I was the only atheist I knew around here. I know I am the only one raising my children to question everything, especially authority and fairy tales such as Christianity.

I have been held down and baptized against my will, as my children's father's parents tried to cast out my "demons". All of my friends are Christian, most of them are YEC's and my family is a bunch of Catholics. I don't like any of them, excepting my grandparents. I work at a pregnancy crisis center as a counselor, and they all hate it, but I someone has to be there to console the little Christian girls before they abort their fetuses. Might as well be someone who doesn't cherry pick verses from a useless book of bullshit to use as justification for the judgement of said girls.

I don't know how my community views me, and I don't care. Their problems with me are not about me, and therefore not my problem. I don't know why I am supposed to give a fuck what a bunch of deluded, ignorant people, suffering from folie a plusieurs think about me.

Yes, Christian America hates atheists. They also hate, Jews, Muslims, Hindus, Wiccans, science, evolution, inconvenient facts, and introspection. So atheists aren't really that special, even if we are on/close to the top of their list of people that they (and their god) hate.

What's a person, like me, a newcommer, supposed to think when the first thing I see are avatars of cartoon characters having sex, or a figure with a large erection, or even your avatar, which I think is some woman from a magazine, or in other atheist forums where half the posts are in some way about sex, sexual freedom, homosexuality, sex with animals, etc?

I'm not saying atheists are all immoral hedonists, but one would certainly get that impression by visiting atheists sites on the web.

Maybe we're not a bunch of sexually repressed people who pretend we don't like sex on the outside while enjoying in secret what we condemn in public. No, with us you're getting what you see. If you can't handle that people like to have sex, then you have serious psychological issues. And you may as well give up trying to control everyone's sex lives like most Christians try to do, because people like sex and there's not a damn thing you can do about it, no matter how much you threaten eternal hellfire.

I've used that phrase for years to describe where I live (and some surrounding areas which are even more religious). It's nothing to drive down the road and see signs that say "Pray to end abortion" or see a church on every block. In fact my nephew who is attending college told me that some of the foreign students are kind of scared of our society because it's so religious.
Christian apologetics is the art of rolling a dog turd in sugar and selling it as a donut.

'And everyone acts like England is this bastion of atheism. I lived there for eight years (1982-1990), and I don't think I ever met one atheist. Granted, I never met anyone who went to church either, but certainly no atheists. Even now, I talk to my daughter who lives there, and she doesn't go to church but she certainly believes in God. For that matter, I don't go to church, but I'm a very strong Christian. When I think of all the people I knew in England, I honestly believe they would answer something like, "I don't go to church, but I believe in God."'

LOOL, ive lived here 26 years and counting and know less than a handful of religious people and not too many more that believe in a god, and if they do its an answr from ignorance ' something had to start it '

You're a bit right,. From what I can gather, most pig ignorant, dogmatic rednecks hate atheists. Seems to me a LOT of people in the deep south especially, need to grow the fuck up.

I live in Australia, one of the most secular societies on earth. Here people who wear their their religions on their sleeve are viewed with suspicion, as if they are a bit 'off'. The same goes for loud 'patriots' (love of country is simply assumed here)

Our Prime Minister is openly atheist ,as are MANY members of both houses of parliament.

I think of atheist haters like this:

I missed that adjective - anti-social.

I'm anti-social because people piss me off and I have a lot of solitary pursuits. Has nothing to do with my lack of faith. I just like plants better than most people.
