December 5, 2011 at 7:12 pm
NASA telescopes found a planet which orbits a star like our sun, and probably has a surface temperature of 72 degrees F.

And only 600 light years away. If we leave now we should be able to get there in about 10 million years.

Great! Now all we have to do is make a space probe that can hit half the speed of light (possibly feasible with today's technology) and we can send a probe to arrive somewhere around 1200 years from now and we'll recieve the first signal from it in ~1800 years or so.
Frikken reality.
If today you can take a thing like evolution and make it a crime to teach in the public schools, tomorrow you can make it a crime to teach it in the private schools and next year you can make it a crime to teach it to the hustings or in the church. At the next session you may ban books and the newspapers...
Ignorance and fanaticism are ever busy and need feeding. Always feeding and gloating for more. Today it is the public school teachers; tomorrow the private. The next day the preachers and the lecturers, the magazines, the books, the newspapers. After a while, Your Honor, it is the setting of man against man and creed against creed until with flying banners and beating drums we are marching backward to the glorious ages of the sixteenth centry when bigots lighted fagots to burn the men who dared to bring any intelligence and enlightenment and culture to the human mind. ~Clarence Darrow, at the Scopes Monkey Trial, 1925

We need those warp drives. Warping is after all theoretically possible.
But how do we contract and expand space around a ship? Figure that out and we'd be on our way.

Mankind's intelligence walks hand in hand with it's stupidity.
Being an atheist says nothing about your overall intelligence, it just means you don't believe in god. Atheists can be as bright as any scientist and as stupid as any creationist.
You never really know just how stupid someone is, until you've argued with them.

Hopefully, by the time science figures out to cover that distance we will have gotten rid of all the jesus freaks who would go there and fuck the place up as they did this one.
Or we could do like that one race in hitchhiker's. Put all the undesirables on one ship and then program it to go somewhere else.
Even if the open windows of science at first make us shiver after the cozy indoor warmth of traditional humanizing myths, in the end the fresh air brings vigor, and the great spaces have a splendor of their own - Bertrand Russell

Didn't England try that with Australia and the United States?
Look at how that turned out. Terrible. Just terrible.
I say just finish trashing the earth and THEN build the space ships and have all the undesirables stay here while the rest of us head for an unspoiled paradise.
By the time their descendants return to Earth via anti-matter powered and Alcubierre driven spacecraft, they can then film the result and send that documentary back in time. The movie is
Idiocracy.
