The study seem to overlook the fact that collapse of individual social political entities as a result of the factors he described has never led to the global collapse of civilization. The study seem to be about forests but focused so much on the death of individual trees that it overlooked the long term growth of the forest, so to speak.

If you regard the collapse of western roman empire as an example of a collapse of society and civilization, you might find that to not be true in the example. When civilization collapses, the poor is ususally already so poor they can hardly get noticeably poorer. But while the rich certainly got a lot poorer compared to what they had before, on the whole they were still much better off than the poor. Of the successor societies that inherited the post collapse world, those which acted to protect the better off from the pre-collapse society also fared the best.
The notion that a major clusterfuck will encourage the thorough overturning of the society, as in the case of the French Revolution or the Balshivek revolution in Russia, appears to be the exception rather than the rule. Usually the post cataclysmic society acts to protect much of the privileges and wealths of much of the pre-cataclysm weathy.
There clearly are long lasting and durable advantages to being rich that can often survive more than one incarnations of civilized society as these societies see themselves.

In the modern urbanized world, is the proportion of non-rich with such survival skills as growing your own food substantially greater than proportion of the rich?
Also, it seems unlikely the collapse of monetary economy, if it happens at all, will happen everywhere at once. So for the wealthy, there is plenty of time to see it coming and to maintain their advantage by converting money into such material wealth as would retain value in a barter economy.
