Palestine

If so, there seems no realistic way out of this situation either now  or for a generation or two, or until a truly horrific terrorist attack occurs.

Leaders on both sides will have to cotton to words rather than violence. I don't know if or when such leadership will arise, but the Camp David Accords took place only four years after the 1973 war.

What else are you looking for?  The US population in 2001 was approximately thirty times larger than the population of Israel now.  The Israelis lost over 1,200 people by the latest count.  The opening move of the Israel-Hamas War is equivalent to the 9-11 attacks being twelve times more deadly than they were.

I'm looking for a better alternative than a cycle of horrific Hamas terrorism, military Israeli reprisal involving war crimes, then uneasy peace with routine mistreatment of Palestinians and occasional terror attacks against Israelis, which continues for 60 years, with the risk of a WMD being used.

Diogenes had a better shot on his quest.

But what would be the outcome of such an event?

They will realize how alien they are in the region if so.
Muslims and Arabs didn't act before because they feared the reaction of foreign countries on them.

Keeping things peaceful needed careful balance: and that balance needed ceasing of fascist deeds and racist actions which are ranked as "war crimes".

With every new war crime done by the Israelies, the balance is damaged. It was broken when the people of Gazza decided to fight through Hamas.

The balance is broken when it is pressured and abused by extremists like Netanyahu and his extreme Right government.

20 years of imprisonment in Gaza, racist remarks, air raids, barrages of murder, no education, no services, of course they will attack Israel.
Of course others will join them from the outside like Lebanon and Yemen.

We saw what happened to Hitler when he built concentration camps, we saw what happened to the Ummayads when they treated Spanish natives like slaves, we saw what happened to the Japanese when they treated Chinese like slaves, extremism create the most resilient enemies you might ever see.

@WinterHold
What do you think is a preferable realistic solution other than to continue the cycle for another generation?

Seems that way.
The best plausible solution, then, is to let the cycle continue whilst working to ensure a future where no one cares about the land anymore thus ending the cycle.

Again, the best option then is to let the cycle continue until it is no longer required. When Judaism, Islam, nationalism, and so on have ceased to be relevant in politics.
