There really seems to be more than just genuine fanaticism based on religious delusion.
It's possible he's just doing a particularly extreme case of what Daniel Kahneman calls Intuitive Hueristics: "when faced with a difficult question, we often answer an easier one instead, usually without noticing the substitution.” Or I'd just call it the Bear Fallacy after that scene from Midsommar:
And it's telling how off the grid he is that somehow "who do you think would be responsible if a nuke was detonated in Tel Aviv" is a less difficult question than "would it be a bad thing if Hamas got a hold of enough materials for a suitcase nuke and detonated it in Tel Aviv?"
