A River ‘Died' Overnight in Zambia After an Acidic Waste Spill at a Chinese-Owned Mine

The spill happened on Feb. 18 when a tailings dam that holds acidic waste from a copper mine in the north of the country collapsed, according to investigators from the Engineering Institution of Zambia.

The collapse allowed some 50 million liters of waste containing concentrated acid, dissolved solids and heavy metals to flow into a stream that links to the Kafue River, Zambia’s most important waterway, the engineering institution said.

“It is an environmental disaster really of catastrophic consequences,” said Chilekwa Mumba, an environmental activist who works in Zambia's Copperbelt Province.

Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema called for help from experts and said the leak is a crisis that threatens people and wildlife along the Kafue, which runs for more than 1,500 kilometers (930 miles) through the heart of Zambia.

“Prior to the 18th of February this was a vibrant and alive river,” said Sean Cornelius, who lives near the Kafue and said fish died and birdlife near him disappeared almost immediately. “Now everything is dead, it's like a totally dead river. Unbelievable. Overnight, this river died.”

teachings of the Bible are so muddled and self-contradictory that it was possible for Christians to happily burn heretics alive for five long centuries. It was even possible for the most venerated patriarchs of the Church, like St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas, to conclude that heretics should be tortured (Augustine) or killed outright (Aquinas). Martin Luther and John Calvin advocated the wholesale murder of heretics, apostates, Jews, and witches. - Sam Harris, "Letter To A Christian Nation"

French deputy asks US for return of Statue of Liberty

Raphael Glucksmann said US no longer represents the values that led France to offer the statue, which was unveiled in New York in 1886

France should take back the Statue of Liberty because the US no longer represents the values that led France to offer the statue, a French Euro-deputy said on Sunday.

Scientist Says He Found Evidence Our Entire Universe Is Trapped Inside a Black Hole

While analyzing images for the telescope's Advanced Deep Extragalactic Survey (JADES), Kansas State University associate professor of computer science Lior Shamir found that out of the 263 galaxies examined, two thirds of them rotated clockwise, while only a third rotated counterclockwise, as detailed in a paper published in the journal Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society.

This challenges the assumption that any given universe would have half of them spinning one way, with the rest spinning counter to that, according to a press release about the discovery.

"It is still not clear what causes this to happen, but there are two primary possible explanations," said Shamir in a statement. "One explanation is that the universe was born rotating. That explanation agrees with theories such as black hole cosmology, which postulates that the entire universe is the interior of a black hole."

The findings add credence to an existing, Russian doll-like theory called "Schwarzschild cosmology," which suggests that our galaxy is trapped within a black hole, which in turn is located inside another universe.

A preferred axis in our universe, inherited by the axis of rotation of its parent black hole, might have influenced the rotation dynamics of galaxies, creating the observed clockwise-counterclockwise asymmetry.

Interesting, but I have to ask - clockwise from which frame of reference?

Quote:Molly Malone statue 'violated' by groping

Dublin's Molly Malone statue should be protected to prevent members of the public from "violating" it by groping the sculpture's breasts, a campaigner has said.

Tilly Cripwell pointed out that the bronze artwork has been groped so many times over the years that its breasts have become discoloured.

The 23-year-old student said she has witnessed "disgusting behaviour" at the statue many times while busking beside it in recent years.

Dublin City Council has said it is considering the campaigner's call to repair the discoloured statue and raise it on to a higher plinth.

The council also confirmed it is in the process of asking tourist companies to deter their customers from touching the statue.

Hmm, maybe they should make bronze statues of nude women which men are allowed to grope all they want so they won't grope poor Molly. Plus, it could be a tourist attraction.
