I think Musk thought he could capture the political process with his own sway. Only, Trump's ego has already captured Congress. 
Who the heck knows what goes through that man's head. I agree this will hurt Tesla even more. It will drive away any new fans he picked up on the right but it's not going to get him any forgiveness on the left.
Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former.

It's being buzzed (as opposed to actually reported) that Trump has finally got it through his thick skull that the DOGE cuts cost more than they saved and has been asking his advisers, 'Was it all just bullshit?'
