Nothing life-threatening. Compound fracture of the right ulna, nearly-amputated finger on right hand, surgery to bolt the arm-bone together and try to save the finger. We're lucky, the Universe could have made this day much worse for our family. Thanks for the kind thoughts.

We're home. Good prognosis for a full recovery. He's loaded like a freight train, and once the shot wears off we'll be hoping the oxy can keep up with the job. But he's home and walking and now on the road to recovery. We're a lucky family, it could have been so much worse.

I had only intended to install the power supply in my case today. However, once I got to fiddling, I ended up installing all the rest, motherboard, processor, heatsink and memory. I was then going to wait until morning to test it, because I knew I would have trouble sleeping if I went to power it on and it was not responsive. But I went ahead anyway. I guess I have no patience today. Anyway, the machine started up and displayed the BIOS screen, which more or less means that the main parts -- motherboard, processor, and memory -- are in good shape. The BIOS indicated that the CPU was idling between 40 and 43 C. I don't know if that's good or bad. Now that the main parts have tested good, if need be, I can go back and revisit the heatsink mounting and cooling solution. I originally ordered a beefier cooler, but the CPU is only 65 watts, so I went back and ordered a simpler cooler.

Getting all the final cables in my new computer plugged in. The case fan hub is in an inappropriate header -- CPU_FAN_OPT -- for the case fans, but it will suffice for now. I have an extra fan extension cable, red, that I can use while waiting for the black ones.

And I went to install Windows and the PC hung at the twirling circle at the beginning. The light on the USB drive was lit solid. Either a defective USB drive or a bad image creation. I redid things with Rufus and a different flash drive and that appears to have cured it.

A few years ago, I saw this episode of What the Fuck is Wrong With You and one of the stories stuck with me: somebody decided to make their own license plate out what looked like leftover tin and acrylic paint. And, evidently, he did not put in the effort to A) make the seven letters and numbers look anywhere near uniform, or B) make sure that the state of California never issued license plates under the name “Califas.”





6 1/2 years later, I found someone willing to make a slightly-more professional-looking replica of that license plate.



Naturally, I’m not sticking it on my Hyundai Elantra because I’m not hopped up on enough meth to think it’s a good idea.

The original story does not betray any SovCit leanings. Apparently, the driver did lack a license, but he apparently had a warrant out for his arrest on a hit and run charge. Also, he was apparently high on meth, with some of the drugs in plain sight.

And I was going to say that the SovCit plates tend to involve bigger and more obvious middle fingers to the government, but, apparently, some are on this level. Maybe not hand-painted, but without the obvious "fuck you, Johnny Law" factor.
