Random Thoughts
RE: Random Thoughts
I have reduced my social media to the occasional visit here and to a nerdy game forum, also occasional.

I have a linkedin profile but it's out of date and I haven't bothered to update it.

Less laughs but also less nonsense.

I don't know how true this is, but it would explain a lot.

If the witch wasn’t completely incinerated after Gretel pushed her into the oven, how do you explain the empty oven? Where is the witch’s body?

The Empty Oven is one of those historical facts that skeptics just can’t explain.
teachings of the Bible are so muddled and self-contradictory that it was possible for Christians to happily burn heretics alive for five long centuries. It was even possible for the most venerated patriarchs of the Church, like St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas, to conclude that heretics should be tortured (Augustine) or killed outright (Aquinas). Martin Luther and John Calvin advocated the wholesale murder of heretics, apostates, Jews, and witches. - Sam Harris, "Letter To A Christian Nation"

A skeptic’s explanation:

You can cremate at human body in 2-3 hours at less than 1000C. I typically exceed that temperature in my smithy.

If we assume that the witch’s oven was lined with good quality firebrick, coated with refractory cement, fueled with anthracite, and equipped with some sort of air blower, Witchy Poo would be reduced to ashes within the time mentioned above. Easy peasy.

Quote:As humankind moves toward the goal of establishing a long-term presence on the moon and Mars, the question of whether reproduction is possible in extraterrestrial environments may no longer be merely hypothetical. And new research using simulated microgravity conditions has identified some major challenges.

Experiments conducted by scientists in Australia found that microgravity conditions, simulated in a laboratory, disrupt sperm navigation, reduce ‌fertilization rates and, when exposure is prolonged, compromise the quality and survival of early embryos.

They found that human and mouse sperm cells were around 50% less effective at swimming through a channel mimicking the female reproductive tract under these conditions compared to normal gravity. In mouse eggs, this translated into a drop of roughly 30% in fertilization success. The research also revealed complications in early embryo development.

"It is not the ability to swim that is affected. Sperm in microgravity still move, they just cannot find their way. The function that appears to be disrupted is navigation, the ability to orient and move with purpose toward a destination. We believe this happens because many of the proteins on the surface of sperm act as ‌mechanosensors, tiny molecular devices that detect physical forces including gravity," McPherson said.

"When that gravitational pull is removed, these sensors appear to be thrown off, leaving the sperm without a reliable frame of reference for up, down or which direction to move. It is a bit like trying to navigate a maze blindfolded and spinning," McPherson said.

^How severely sperm motility would be affected on Luna or Mars isn’t really addressed by that study, since it looks at microgravity, not low gravity.

Still, if it’s an issue at low gravity, I imagine it could be solved with a centrifuge. We could even give it a snazzy name - ‘The Spin-n-Fuck’ or some such.
