As an allergy sufferer, I hear it a lot - even from people I work with that I am almost certain are not believers. It doesn't annoy me. It's a custom with archaic roots that's ingrained in our culture, and for some people, it's practically automatic, and it's meant to be polite. I've caught myself saying it on occasion. I prefer the German "gesundheit" as (I think) it has no superstitious connotations.

...though at times, I'm inclined to say, "Hey, cover that sneeze, asshole!"

I think I agree with both you and Shell on this. I mean, I never actually get offended about it. However, it's like "Sneeze!" "Bless You!" and then I'm just thinking in my head "...fucking religion"

Yeah, I use gesundheit too (much to the amusement of my German classmates).

And I think you can imagine that working at a pharmacy during flu season is awful.. People sneezing in their hands, just before reaching for their money, that I have to touch *shiver* Makes me want to teach them how to do it with as little spread as possible, or force them to at least use the hand disinfectant afterwards Big Grin

If I'm correct, Gesundheit means 'health'. A fuck loads better than that religious "bless you" bollocks.
