The point is binny, there is no difference between denying a black person a job because they are black, and accepting a black person over a white person because they are black. It's racism either way. I agree, the world is far from perfect, but how will we ever get to a near perfect world without striving towards it? Affirmative action seeks to separate and tell us that people of different coloured skin are "different" when the truth is they are not. They are no more different than people of different coloured hair.

More good news, your an atheist so you are in a minority. If some weird reality occurred where affirmative action was placed on atheists, I'd make sure I didn't reveal my religious beliefs and got a job through my qualifications alone. I don't want my minority status to affect anything about my life.

I strongly agree on the matter of death penalty and torture Adrian. The death penalty is, indeed, the ultimate hypocrisy. And it is totally sinking to their level.
Sinking to the level of the unjust is both immorally hypocritical and ironically feeble. When it's an attempt at righteousness, it is hypocritically inhumane; and when it is an attempt at strength, of 'fighting back', it's in fact a pathetic display of weak-mindedness; and perhaps, just plain panic and non-thinking.

If we take an eye... for an eye... the whole world will go blind.-(quoted from someone who is not me) That is the simple truth of the matter.

On racism/affirmatiuve action. Racism still pervades the uk.Frequent tv documentaries have shown how people with broadly the same qualifications but 1 is white, the other black, have applied for jobs and the white has got the job. The same thing happens when landlords use agents and tell them to make sure only whites get the tenancy. In the bad old days, landlords could get away with having " no blacks " in their windows...just like America had segregation.
Racism is still alive and kicking, that's why legislation was brought in to try to counter it.

We are all humans... my definition of race is the same as specie, except that i mostly use it to describe other intellectually advanced life forms (like chimpanzees and extra terrestrials [in some cases]).
I see only bigotry, hypocrisy, stupidity, and fear in what others call racism... and i see it all happening over color? That thought-line reeks of really rotten fish in a hot sun.

Humanity is a species, and there are different races. And to be racist, to hate another race, to hate the colour of someone's skin, to hate someone for how they were born as if it's any 'worse' than the way you were - is horribly immoral. And what makes it even worse, is the fact it's so common.

Not only color, but culture too. We have many Russians here. They are all white. I hear racial slurs about them too.

That's racism's close relative, bigotry.

Race is different to culture right? It's another form of prejudice yes, although I don't think it's quite as bad, because race is a more physical thing so it's even closer to the person, even more personal. Not something anyone should be able to 'attack'.
I mean like, if some Brits and French are prejudice to each other because they're a different country, that's not prejudice between races because there are a mixture of races in Britain and France. Right?
Or have I misunderstood you or something?
@ bozo, I think racism is a particularly nasty form of bigotry. Bigotry is a very broad thing indeed.
