I'm a 21 year old catholic-turned-atheist from NY. I grew up in an Irish catholic family living in an Irish catholic neighborhood, but I never felt like I belonged, partially because I could never fully bring myself to blindly follow a belief with so many loopholes. I'd love to make some friends here since I don't know many atheists in real life (I still live with my mother while I attend a local college, and in our house, "atheist" is a dirty word).

I was accepted to a few universities in the UK a few years ago and would have gone had I could have gotten the money together. She who gets around might get noticed. She who gets noticed has acquired a valuable asset indeed: eyes. I have only been on this forum for six months and At first I was not ready for the differences of American and British culture. I am now not surprised at all that you don't know any atheists. The level of conformity expected in America shocked me. The amount of posts I am an atheist, but it would upset so many people if I admitted it, means you probably know many, but they will not speak about it openly.
