Hello, Teen Atheist from Tennessee here
January 20, 2013 at 10:55 am
So I've recently made the decision to be Atheist. I haven't told my parents who happen to be Catholic. That's pretty much my situation. I don't really know if I should come out or not. There's also the problem that my girlfriend is pretty religious. So yeah. Anyways, I'm socially awkward, into video games, and obviously love to play trombone. I'm probably going to be posting a fair amount on this forum since I have no one to talk to about my beliefs in real life. So Hi!
"I trust my own reason and my own capacities to think and educate myself and to reach greater levels of knowlege and status through learning and work. To me, wishing for a god is like wishing to be a slave, it is like declaring that one is too incompetent to handle one's own affairs." - the germans are coming

Hi there from the UK!
At the age of five, Skagra decided emphatically that God did not exist. This revelation tends to make most people in the universe who have it react in one of two ways - with relief or with despair. Only Skagra responded to it by thinking, 'Wait a second. That means there's a situation vacant.'

Hey there. Enjoy your stay in this forum. Everyone's relatively normal, but we do have a few whack jobs popping up now and again, bashing their bibles and Qur'ans around the place!
Also, your situation is very similar to what mine was, and many others I'm sure. If you want to be honest in any sense of the word, you should definitely come out. The longer you wait, the worse the situation will get. What if you married your girlfriend, and then came out after so long? That would not end well I can tell you. If she dumps you because to your beliefs then, quite frankly, she doesn't deserve you. You would be far too virtuous for the her. As for your parents, remember this: if the nature of your relationship changes when you come out, the split will be entirely their fault. You need not worry though, most parents, mine included, are considerate enough to love you despite your opposing beliefs. Coming out will free you up massively, and an enormous weight will lift. I think the hardest part of this will be finding a point in a conversation where you can tell them your choice. Good luck bro!

Namaste, or something. Don't tell your folks until you have a job, your own place and are totally, financially independent. Tell the girlfriend, though. Seriously, I've been down that road; it's a long story but trust me, you don't want to end up having to lie to her the rest of your life just to keep the peace.
