Yes; it is the largest religious event in world,with numbers regularly exceeding three million. It's considered a great blessing to die during Hajj,as you'd expect..(I wonder if being born there counts as having made the hajj?)

There is no Christian equivalent..Non Muslims are forbidden on pain of death.(really).The hajj is one of the Five Pillars of Islam. Every Muslim is expected to make the effort at least once in lifetime. One can only imagine the hardship that must have entailed as recently as 100 years ago. I hope its sarcasm. The BBC had an article (curse my poor linking skills), where an Iranian girl was sentenced to death by a Sharia court and hung for the crime of BEING RAPED.

In Iran and other countries that follow Sharia, the rights of women are severely curtailed. This means that women can not go out without a male chaperone, (even its its just a male child), Cant go to school. Are forced to cover up in ridiculous ways and are generally treated as second class citizens.

Islam may have its good points but its treatment of women isnt one of them.
