As the west leaves suicides in Afghanistans most liberal city increase
July 26, 2013 at 2:45 am
Quote:Women in Mazar-e-Sharif have straddled the worlds between Western freedoms and conservative traditions for a decade. As the Taliban gains strength and the West pulls out, Afghanistan's most liberal city is being plagued by a rash of suicides.

This sounds wrong, man. Claiming that the suicides are connected to the pulling out of the west is simply making things a bit more nicer in the eyes of someone, giving them the impression that the Western occupation will be missed.

Sad.
Suicide or oppression. Not much joy in that choice. The fact family members and authorities glibly deny the issue is reprehensible.
This kinda makes me wish there was a female prophet out there. Let her revelation of the primacy of woman spread over the lands of Misogyny. The Abrahamic faiths have dicked things up enough, now, methinks.

Wether or not the West exacerbated the situation by coming or going isn't the main issue. Back-assward mores and a dearth of social programs to assist those in need is. Yes?

Nope.
It is well known that loads of people who worked together with coalition forced and are involved with the current regime are shoving their money and if possible themselves into the West.
Britain, France and Germany are currently debating to give Asylum to translators.
There is nothing about this subject which in any way indicates that there is something which is made nicer for the west to view.
In fact it makes the west`s failure in Afghanistan worse when one consideres how great the fear of a resurging Taligban is, and that it actualy is possible.

Coming into a country that had once stability, even perhaps under the Taliban(former western puppet), and then dividing the population between NATO supporters and Taliban supporters and then moving out all of a sudden, will leave people in fear. Collaborators will now fear for their lives. Perhaps you should take them with you and give them asylum in your own lands if you feel bad about it.

Well, there is a certain "failure" to speak of yes. However there also is the public image of the whole war business, as with all wars, the US is there to spread democracy or whatever. This time though, there is no communism that people run away from.
The public now sees that the people of Afghanistan simply don't want them there, else the Taliban would not be able to hold their ground like this, after losing so many fighters, I mean.
But with things like these, it gives them the impression that they're still "needed", they need to protect these poor women from the Taliban. The fact is, they should have thought that before letting them loose.

I'm sure there are Afghani women who long for the days when the Taliban ruled. Like two. I can see how a vacuum created by the West could muddy things, but to claim these women's issues wouldn't be if it wasn't for Western interference goes too far. They're just more visible. I don't agree that the stability pre-occupation was such hot shit, either.
If I had the means, I'd love to do a swap...Afghanistan's females for America's fundies. Win/win!

If I had the means, I'd love to do a swap...Afghanistan's females for America's fundies. Win/win! You don't agree? Well having a country that produced few amounts of opium(the Taliban was burning their fields, and of course punishing those who had planted them) before the occupation, and one that breaks production records every year speaks for instability friend!
I prefer the worst stability over the best instability any time.
Besides, I know not much about the women there, I've never been to Afghanistan to speak of it. Though it is a fact that they are mistreated, especially within the ranks of the taliban, who performs actions which are not necessarily in accordance with Islamic law(such as cutting off limbs, noses, ears and other body parts of women) it is also a fact that the Taliban also has a lot of support amongst the populace, very much like the Vietcong did, although they had applied similar methods to dissidents and NATO sympathisants, by killing them in horrible ways, and dumping their bodies in mass graves.
The thing is, people will pick the worst native over the best foreigner at any time. Especially the Afghans, who value independence.
Besides, I don't know what you're going to do with a whole lot of Pashtos and Tajiks. There are a certain number of my own kinsmen in Afghanistan, Turkmens and Uzbeks, whom I'd like to relocate to our lands, though the rest are really not my concern. I'm just telling you that these news are there to increase the amount of support for the war in the west, nothing more nothing else.
