Are you saying you were taught to fear hell to come to Christ, if you were you're were not alone, even Christ taught that hell is an awful place. Once you accepted Christ why would you have a fear of hell it's no longer a part of your life.

That's the problem many Christians find themselves in, after receiving Christ as savior they do not grow into that loving relationship. A new Christian should be taught by older Christian how to grow into a relationship of love. Seems this may not have been your experience and for that I'm sorry.
