It sounds to me that you just stuck with how you were raised and you didn't seriously question the existence of God or give it any real thought yourself. An argument atheists use on theists is that you just believe whatever your parents believed. The notion that God is some kind of myth, fairy-tale or unscientific can be just as much a cultural transmission as a religion can be and it can just as easily be wrong.

Actually, I never said my parents believed God did not exist. I said my parents never tried to force any kind of religion onto me. They raised me to think for myself and to choose my own choices. I inherited no mentality from them. They weren't even all that forthcoming with their political views. They refused to raise me with their beliefs so that I could make my own decisions.

I was never a Christian, but in a predominantly Christian culture, things like church with grandma on Sundays seemed to be part of normal life. Once I realized things like that were just religion and not a necessary part of life (like school) I stopped bothering.

Yeah, I'm so glad I left the shackles behind. Then agian you never got to experience deconversion, It's BOOM suddenly your chrisitianity make no sense and all of a sudden you can't believe any more. It's like the demolition of a delapitated building, It's starts off strong and new, then over time loses it grandeur and cracks start to form, as time goes on things you can't start to break down like the electrical(the thoughts in the back of your mind that in my case I didn't even realise were there) and then on a demo team rolls in and blows the whole thing in a day or two.

Welcome from another "born a heathen."
Your upbringing sounds a lot like mine to the extent that my parents wanted me to discover for myself how to think about the world. Both were non-practicing Christians whom I think were best characterized as agnostic. On the weekends, either Saturday or Sunday depending on which "holy day" was appropriate, we got dragged to every imaginable kind of religious service: Unitarians, Catholics, Methodists, Lutherans, Baptists, Presbyterians, Jews, Buddhists, UCC, Seventh Day Adventists, Mormons... they, and others I don't even remember, all had a crack at us. I found it all culturally intriguing but not persuasive. So I wondered for a time why I didn't get the joke and spent a chunk of my life reading the bible and other holy works, figuring go to the source, right? Boy, THAT was a mistake! Didn't take long to understand -- quite to my horror -- that significant segments of the world's population labor under mass delusions, which are largely reinforced by the fact that so many others labor under them, too. How sick is that??
Anyway... sorry for the digression... glad you're on board, and I look forward to reading your contributions!

You know, I don't think being an anti-theist helps much, they usually react to antagonizers with reaffirming their silly beliefs, plus, we need something to point and laugh
