Perhaps religion is only important to the religious?

I remember when I reached 20 and the false sense of teenage immortality went out the window. It was quite a terrifying moment for me at that time. My atheist parents couldn't offer any comforting lies. They just offered their sympathy. That was enough. Eventually, I reached the acceptance stage of grief. Christians and Muslims are still stuck in the denial/bargaining stage.

Also, what's important is not outbreeding the religious in general. The average Christian is only of threat to society when they vote for terrible politicians. A lot, perhaps even a large majority, of professed Christians are really not much, if any, more religious or spiritual than we are. The threat is the fundamentalist. They're the ones controlling the sheep.
