The reason I know that Scientology is a total scam is that their "E-meters" are nothing more than a simple electronic circuit called a Wheatstone bridge. All it measures is the resistance between the hands of the person being "read." Anyone who knows anything about electronics has probably heard of a Wheatstone bridge.

Scientology teaches that people are immortal beings who have forgotten their true nature. And people thought David Koresh was nuts?

Hey, it's not any more or less insane than the concept of immortal souls, when you think about it.

No, they'll just turn the dial down so the needle is in the middle of the dial. I think what they look for is the needle swinging back & forth a lot. But I'm guessing that no matter what the reading, it's probably just a scam to get you into their cult so they can sell you books and "auditing" sessions. Basically, it's just a prop. Something that looks "scientific" but the only purpose is to tell the interested party that they have "engrams" in their soul which need to be removed.

(Amusingly, I tried to look this up on scientology.org and found it was blocked because "This Websense category is filtered: Non-Traditional Religions and Occult and Folklore." Haha)
Asked about God by David Mayo, Hubbard's auditor, Hubbard replied "There is no big thetan" (soul). That is there is no God. Scientology is indeed atheistic.

The reason why atheists and agnostics would 'reject' Scientology, is because like all 'religions' (and it's classified as one) it causes someone to look outside of themselves for happiness. Religion promises people so many things, that if they would just take the time to 'get to know' themselves, they might learn to make necessary changes where they need to, and live better lives. Instead, there are a TON of discontent religious people out there, many who profess this or that, but they don't seem happy to me in the least. There are many happy religous people out there too, don't get me wrong. But, it's not a panacea for what ails ya. If you are unhappy, religion won't magically make you happy. It is MUCH harder to self reflect and make changes, than to just run off to a cult or a religion and get lost in it. That's what a lot of people do.
When the going gets rough, some take to drugs. Some take to alcohol. Some take to religion. Vices come in all shapes and sizes.

I look outside of myself for happiness all the time. These beers aren't going to drink themselves, you know.
"Well, evolution is a theory. It is also a fact. And facts and theories are different things, not rungs in a hierarchy of increasing certainty. Facts are the world's data. Theories are structures of ideas that explain and interpret facts. Facts don't go away when scientists debate rival theories to explain them. Einstein's theory of gravitation replaced Newton's in this century, but apples didn't suspend themselves in midair, pending the outcome. And humans evolved from ape- like ancestors whether they did so by Darwin's proposed mechanism or by some other yet to be discovered."
