This Crinkles My Bag

This Crinkles My Bag
I carried a colorful fabric book bag for years and I took a lot of guff from insecure men on campus who were so uncomfortable with their own masculinity that they felt it necessary to attack me for expressing myself. My bag was less purse-like than this lads, and I did not wear skinny jeans and girl's belts like Skylar does, but for fuck sake, leave this young man alone.

My wife showed me this story today, and I'm conflicted on how I feel about this. I think the school is hoping to avoid having the boy teased, but I say if he's confident carrying the bag, then let him continue to do so. The school has imposed some strict sanctions upon its students. I think the world's skin is getting thinner. Fucking grow a pair, and leave a man's bag alone.

"It expresses myself and I think everyone else can wear it, so I wear it as well," Skylar told KCTV5's Dave Jordan.
He was summoned to Assistant Principal Don Hillard's office after he wouldn't take it off.
"I went to the office and I refused to take it off, and they suspended me," the teen explained.

I've ALWAYS carried a bag, though not quite as colourful as the one in the article. Fortunately for me, I'm the sort of bloke that doesn't often get a hard time.

I think this lad was treated shamefully. If they're going to discipline the boys for purses, do they also discipline the girls who carry wallets?

While we're at it, how about we crush any sense of individuality?

Goddammit, Kansas.

It honestly wouldn't surprise me if the boy got suspended because "men don't wear these" and nothing more. Props to the boy for standing his ground. Besides, if they're worried about bullying just fill the bag with bricks >.>

In [fairness], the school has an overall policy which prohibits ANY student from carrying ANY bag into certain core classes. It's unclear whether Skylar Davis violated the policy concerning the core class restriction. I intend to follow this story. If the boy broke a rule that all students are to abide by, then I think the suspension is valid. Otherwise, let him carry the bag.

IF that is true, and IF they also apply the prohibition to female students, then I would agree.

Otherwise, not so much.

Perhaps they were jealous it was a Vera Bradley bag.

Lousy secondary reporting. This is from the original (linked) report:

Quote: Anderson County School District Superintendent Don Blome said Thursday that he could not discuss the specific case because of privacy concerns. However, he said all students, whether female or male, are prevented from having bags, purses, satchels and backpacks in the core classrooms like English and math. The bags must be stored in lockers during class time, he said.

He said he has been superintendent for six years and that even before his arrival that junior high students couldn't bring bags into the core classes.

"That's been a long-standing rule," he said, adding he believes it dates back at least 10 years.

So now we know why our little pal Skyler has been wearing the purse since the beginning of school with no issues. Skyler recently took it upon himself to break the 'no purse/bags in class' rule. The little prick should put his purse up during class like everyone else and go learn something. If he wants to stand out as an individual, he should get straight As.

Stupid rule? Perhaps, but fuck this little twit. An example that poor U.S. education performance isn't entirely the fault of faculty and curriculum; students don't go to school to learn, but to make social statements. Can he solve for 'x'? No, but he can wear the shit out of a purse. Fuck Skyler.

Skyler? Reminds me of this....

Hey, I carry a bag that has my sci calculator, a swiss army (macgyver) knife, my pen drives with windows 7 all version installer, hiren's boot, my wallet plus my rolling tobacco & rolling papers. I hear snide remarks about my masculinity for doing so, but I usually smile & give 0 fucks about it.

A prepared man > prejudice.

I'd be, they actually enforce it on both genders.

I've become far too cynical.
