Whats the point of modern science?

My question is, what is the point of the new sciences like astrophysics, quantum physics, etc. when the discoveries the research yields are so arcane that it doesn't even matter to anyone or change anything or help anyone?

I'm gonna pay for that, aren't I...
Honestly there is no point. None at all. Truly, modern science is just scientists prodding around while wearing lab-coats, absolutely no point at all. That is all it is, completely pointless. After all, you are the thinking theist, I'm sure you think more than those dumb scientists do anyway. What use is there to science anyway? Pfffft!

I don't want to think if I don't have to, dammit! Tongue

Anyway, that user is really just a play on TTA's name. You'll find that I'm quite the immature, pedantic little shit.

But, seriously, why the hyper defensive fighting words?

I made one extra account my friend! ALMASSAH! The others are RBF's, the guy who stole my password.

Eh... forget it. I'll just let TTA be TTA and AF be Af.

Astrophysics + Quantum physics = shutting the creationists up when they ask how something can come from nothing.

Quantum physics = quantum entanglement = better encryption / quantum computers / transporter tech / instantaneous communications over vast distances....... The list goes on and on.

Well, I expected more of this:

A bit of troll, double action irony.

The first 2:00 of this video is a good answer to your question.

I recommend the whole episode: it's awesome. There are about 4-5 segments; just watch the first one.

You don't have to be a xtian. "Thinking_Theist" is enough of an oxymoron to cover any of it.

Kindly take whatever variant of a Fairy God Father you have invented for yourself and blow it out your ass.

I think the OP needs to factor in time into his equation, then contemplate that despite the fact that research conducted in the present might not yield any advances in the immediate future, it doesn't thus equate it to being useless.

Does the OP have any idea the work that went into making penicillin an actual viable antibiotic? And I don't mean the simple accident if Flemming's discovery.

I suspect that perhaps the OP doesn't know, or even care. But he would if he knew .

In fact, OP, to give you an opportunity to prove that you're no trolling, please define adequately what the difference is between 'modern science' and (by definition) not-modern science, and what the benefits of the latter have been that you feel trump the (imagined?) benefits of the former.

Thanks.

Well, the new sciences are the ones that deal with space-time. The old ones deal with more terrestrial things like biology and so on. The benefits of geology and biology and such are really good, practical stuff. I feel that the new sciences are a bit of a waste because there hasn't been, for example, a new discovery in particle physics for something like 40 years.

So it isn't really about old and new. It's about those you understand and those you don't. Because astronomy has been around since the ancient empires, people have been starting to think about atoms since ancient Greece.
