Quirky habits

Them: Did you have a good day today?

Me: Well, define "good". How good are we talking? Just sort of okay, not bad, or does it have to be particularly above average? Can you define good in a way that isn't just opinion? Is it just that I have to think it was good? What if part of it was good but part of it was bad so it evens out to about average; is that good? Because I'm not really sure if...

Them: Uh...

I like occasionally responding to social niceties like "Did you have a good day?" or "How are you doing?" with drawn out diatribes describing my current woes and irritations, secretly reveling in how uncomfortable I'm making the other person feel when you know they were expecting a simple "Yeah" or "Okay" response. It's especially fun to do this when you don't know the person very well which hugely magnifies the probability that they are expecting a standard, one-word response to their greeting.

Maybe next time I'll throw in an absurd definition request. Big Grin

I used to do that a lot, completely unwittingly, to the woman that drove me 20 mi. to high school every day in Florida. Poor woman.

RE: Quirky habits
I have a habit of tailing off when saying hi to someone I vaguely know around work.

I think mainly it's because there was this guy I always said hi to, but I was never fully sure whether the name I had for this was his actual name, so I just made it indecipherable to the point where it sounded a bit like everything.

Maybe I've just used that experience and made it a staple greeting to everyone, heh.

turns out the guy's name was Paul, which was the name I had in my head.

Reading this thread is fascinating. Big Grin

I scratch my cuticles with anything sharp I can fashion: Foil wrappers, bed sheets, exact-o blades. I avoid using anything like an exact-o blade, because with something so unyielding I'll scratch them till they bleed.

It's obviously a self-soothing behavior, but other than that, I have no idea why I do it. I've done this since I was a tiny child.

Onychotillomania.

As I tell my patients, God gave you two perfectly good holes in the middle of your face. You wanna pick, pick them.

ROFL, well, Wikipedia was NOT a comfort on that one!!

I must have a mild case, then, because my nails don't look like that. The habit has become less compulsive through the years. I don't pick at my nails or try to tear them off, though I do keep them consistently trimmed in a neat fashion. I've grown my nails out a few times but prefer them short only because I hate them catching on things or bending back without breaking.

Thanks for sharing that, Jacob! (I think.)

RE: Quirky habits
I have a load of weird quirks not all of them habits though.

Whenever I eat I check everything to make sure it's completely clean. If I see anything at all it will all be scrubbed and cleaned. Once I've done that I get out the things that are being cooked/prepared and if it's any different to how it usually is then I start again and find something else to make. It usually takes around 15-20 mins to actually start making a meal. I also have to keep washing my hands the whole way along. Not just to have them clean but I hate having anything on my hands.

Theres a bunch of other things that will screw with my head while I'm eating or preparing food but none of it makes sense and its all very boring.

If somebody gets too near me or tries to touch me I immediately take a big step backwards and frown at them. I also stare at people's noses if I have to look at them. I'm not a fan of people's eyes.

I don't like to use people's names unless I absolutely have to.

If I have bare feet I keep my toes up. I hate the feeling of having any pressure on my toes.

I'm also more than a bit odd when it comes to talking to people. It's not really habit so much as just being strange so Ill save those for another time.
