RE: My Fellow Atheist
TD I am with you on your assertion that god or gods do not exist and that they are a creation of man, I also agree that the bible is man made and that it too is not god inspired. I consider myself to be a strong atheist and assert that when it comes to discussions of god and proving his existence that the onus of proof is the responsibility of the persons making the assertion. I don't have to prove that god does not exist because I am not the one making a positive claim in his favor. Having studied the history of religion and even delved into some comparative religious studies I am 100 percent sure to my own satisfaction that god is a fabrication of the fertile imagination of man.

When it comes to the existence of god my most hated field of study is philosophy, particularly apologetics. Delving deep into the possibility of the existence of god basing yourself on his so called attributes, his realm of existence, etc. etc. is in my opinion an exercise in futility. Before you can prove anything else you must prove that he exists. The concept of god is just that, an idea and nothing more. Add some mental devotion, some emotion, and some self debasement and you have yourself a good Christian.

Quote:Wow, the conclusions you draw are...well...interesting. You are about the most melodramatic dipshit I have ever met haha. "I'll stick with freedom.." hahah you are hilarious.

Kindly have the common decency to get to know Frodo a little better before insulting him, there's a good chap.

In the meantime if you lack the wit to refute his arguments perhaps say nothing rather than being rude. If he's being especially irritating and/or inane, which is often, just ignore him, like most of us.Angel Cloud

I too must rush to the defence of my adopted son.

Take a look at the number of posts he's made, how long he's been here, his reputation and note the fact that he's seventh in the 'top members of all time' list, just below me :p. Agreed, he's a geriatric old deluded theist :S but he's earned his place here and that, in my book, commands a certain degree of respect.

He may not be an atheist but in every other respect he's one of us so, as padraic suggested, take some time to understand the mind behind the mask before you vent your spleen.

so then do idea's exist?
"There ought to be a term that would designate those who actually follow the teachings of Jesus, since the word 'Christian' has been largely divorced from those teachings, and so polluted by fundamentalists that it has come to connote their polar opposite: intolerance, vindictive hatred, and bigotry." -- Philip Stater, Huffington Post

Not that anyone is saying you're wrong. Frodo is a generic geriatric old deluded theist melodramatic dipshit, but he's a well loved and respected generic geriatric old deluded theist melodramatic dipshit.

He, and others here, subscribe to their own brand of christianity. They don't subscribe to parts of the bible they dislike and subscribe to the parts they like. They use words to describe their brands like; common-sense, logic, deductive reasoning. Their stand(s) on the matter could be boiled down to "I make it up as I go along." An expanded version of 'Goddidit'.

And that particular type of theology is most frustrating to discuss.
I used to tell a lot of religious jokes. Not any more, I'm a registered sects offender.

If only they had the honesty to say "Yes, perhaps it is possible that it could be my brain making up stimuli to make me feel fuzzy inside with a bit of wishful thinking."

tackattack wrote:"so then do idea's exist?"

definition from wikipedia:
In the most narrow sense, an idea is just whatever is before the mind when one thinks. Very often, ideas are construed as representational images; i.e. images of some object. In other contexts, ideas are taken to be concepts, although abstract concepts do not necessarily appear as images.[1] Many philosophers consider ideas to be a fundamental ontological category of being.

Obviously ideas cannot exist in the physical realm as you and I do. That is the reason that I think ideas are as described above concepts created within the mind. Almost everything we know to exist in the physical realm such as tables, chairs, electronic inventions started out as ideas or concepts based on the development of previous knowledge. Once they made it past the thinking and planning stage the labor of making those ideas a reality through the act of invention and ingenuity brought those ideas into existence. Your God is an idea but his existence is beyond the realm of reality and the proof of said existence is unattainable.

The concept of god started as an idea, was accepted and believed, and finally was charged with the investment of ones emotional content. This is what gives the idea of god life but if you can't do this (believe without proof) then god remains an idea and nothing more.
