Ah, yes... the old "could have been a gun" defense...used by fucking cops everywhere to justify their murders. Why not spread it to John Q. Public?

I have read parts of this thread but not all and here is my two cents. First off I don't own a gun, never even shot a gun that had bullets, just shotguns for trap and skeet shooting. There a more guns in the U.S. than there are people and if I want to protect my home, I would consider seriously getting gun. I know some of you will say the gun can be taken away and used against me, but I think it is better to have a gun and not need one then to need a gun and not have one. I want to repeat I don't own a gun, never have, but times change.
PS if someone buys a gun they should learn about safety, practice at a firing range, don't just get a gun and strap it to your leg like a cowboy.

Here's the corollary. People always get complacent when things become familiar. Its why we have reports in this thread of seasoned cops putting their gun down so their 4 year old nephew can walk in and pick it up and kill someone or himself.

That's probably true but I still see how some people would rather have a gun in a bad situation. Like I said before I never owned a gun but if someone was breaking in I will trust a gun in my hand. I think it depends on who has the gun, someone who panics or is indecisive might better off if they did not own a gun IMO

So should everyone be penalized because of the actions of a few idiots?

No one should have grills because after every hurricane that knocks out power to a region some idiots are going to use it inside their house and kill the entire family with carbon monoxide poisoning.

Even more apt is that no one needs cars that are excessively powerful. No car needs to go faster than 70 MPH as it is too dangerous for everyone. Ban the SUV! Ban the muscle cars!
