Tyson wasn't comparing Halley's prophecy with "any other method". He was comparing it to religious prophecy.
I have made all my points. If you don't want to believe this television show doesn't have any anti-religious undertones....have at it. I'm done talking about religious undertones in Cosmos unless someone really makes a compelling counter point.

We did. Sorry we didn't meet your expectations. Cosmos is anti-ignorance, not anti-religion, but if its program causes viewers to question their erroneous beliefs, then this is something to celebrate, not bemoan.

I caught the anti religious undertones right from ep 1
But then, they were in the original book(I never saw the series)
But so what?

So once again, religion gets its own, elevated platform? Is religious prophecy in a different category than "any other method?" Is saying that one thing produces better results than another the same thing as saying that I am 'anti-the second thing'?

"There remain four irreducible objections to religious faith: that it wholly misrepresents the origins of man and the cosmos, that because of this original error it manages to combine the maximum servility with the maximum of solipsism, that it is both the result and the cause of dangerous sexual repression, and that it is ultimately grounded on wish-thinking." ~Christopher Hitchens, god is not Great

The truth is, as a practical matter, anti-religious. To that extent, I appreciate your point, Heywood.

I could produce right now any number of vids of evangelists and creationist condemning atheists and scientists as being agents of satan.
So if cosmos is anti religious, deal with it princess.

Watch the episode again. Tyson claims with some disdain in his voice and his facial expression, "there was hardly ever a prophecy attempted by the mystics that even strives for comparable precision". He is slamming mystics. If the show is only supposed to get people excited by science, why slam mystics?
You guys seem to get upset at the suggestion that the show has "anti-religious undertones". Why does that bother you?
There is no room for mysticism in science. The show is about science. Get over it.
Skepticism is not a position; it is an approach to claims.
Science is not a subject, but a method.

I fully support anti-religion undertones. Sorry that science doesn't fit your beliefs the way it's expressed through cosmos. Christianity needs to man up and understand that in this day and age everything is going to be criticized. It's not even a direct attack on religion and already the oppressors are trying to once again play the victim.
