They already do.

"I think I use the term “radical” rather loosely, just for emphasis. If you describe yourself as “atheist,” some people will say, “Don’t you mean ‘agnostic’?” I have to reply that I really do mean atheist, I really do not believe that there is a god; in fact, I am convinced that there is not a god (a subtle difference). I see not a shred of evidence to suggest that there is one ... etc., etc. It’s easier to say that I am a radical atheist, just to signal that I really mean it, have thought about it a great deal, and that it’s an opinion I hold seriously." - Douglas Adams (and I echo the sentiment)

Of course they can. This is a classical example of the double-think that escpecially the catholic church is so good at. When it suits the catholic church, completely unscientific religious doctrine is true. When a new scientific discovery allows the catholic church to grab more land, followers or riches, science is right -- regardless of wether it contradicts religious doctrine or not.
Sometimes the earth is the center of the solar system. Sometimes, the sun is the center of the solar system. It all depends on where the Catholic church needs it to be.

The problem is that you're boxing yourself in, setting arbitrary boundaries, and limiting your ability to perceive. You're saying that if science can't prove it, then it's not possible.

That's actually a misconception that seems to be perpetrated by the religious. Science says that if you can't demonstrate a claim, you have no justification for saying or believing it is true, not that it must necessarily be ruled out.

And it's not boxing yourself in. It's recognizing the frailty of the human ability to determine reality beyond empirical observation. It's accepting that our minds have limitations and refusing to fall prey to them. It's refusing to embrace anthropocentrism and emotionally loaded reasoning. What you see as limiting the ability to perceive is, in fact, an attempt to avoid the inherent pitfalls that come with perception. These aren't arbitrary boundaries. They are an acknowledgement of the weakness of the human brain.
Even if the open windows of science at first make us shiver after the cozy indoor warmth of traditional humanizing myths, in the end the fresh air brings vigor, and the great spaces have a splendor of their own - Bertrand Russell

I don't like to give them an inch.

But then you've always been much more conscientious about keeping the shit that gets left all over the forums here to a minimum. I've been willing to put on my waders and go out pretty deep into some of that shit, but I think my tolerance is wearing thin.

I have to say that whateverist's generally non adversarial approach makes his views much more persuasive and harder to ignore.

Even with the more rational Christians I don't think science should co-exist with religion. If you give Christians an inch it validates them, I think it is time for people to grow up

With respect, who are you to tell people to grow up? Telling people what they should believe is the usual preserve of theists and rightly pisses people off.

In South Carolina a bill proposed by an 8 year girl to make the mammoth the official state fossil has stalled in the state senate because some creatotard senator amended it to add praise Jesus and goddidit.

This type of religion is not compatible with anything but ignorance.
