What Do You Believe Will Happen To You Once You Die?

Does that mean letting enough air out will cause it to disappear? I misunderstood you, Simon Moon. Care to share some examples of people having their hard-drives formatted after some gnarly brain damage?
Again, afk so apologies if this has come up already.
Re the OP: does belief seriously have any bearing on whatever may - or may not - come when we have shuffled off this mortal coil? Or indeed on anything else?
At the age of five, Skagra decided emphatically that God did not exist. This revelation tends to make most people in the universe who have it react in one of two ways - with relief or with despair. Only Skagra responded to it by thinking, 'Wait a second. That means there's a situation vacant.'

Thank you ahead of time for your responses. A concept that merely reflects in comic book form our own childish selfish desires of wanting power and control. The conflict we cause as atheists is that our empathy is our recognition of our evolution and that claims of god are merely the dark reflection of the power we as a species seek in order to survive. They have yet to understand mundane human evolutionary psychology. We understand which is why we reject such vile concepts.
If you are famous in life they'll put up a statue of you, like Queen Victoria,
which can fall into neglect and be covered in pigeon shit. Meanwhile, Victoria is just fucking dead and oblivious to it all.
That is a good point. We build all sorts of monuments to our gods or political parties or leaders, and no matter how long they last, they still decay. How special should one feel if a pigeon can shit on you? Fame and power are always temporary and fleeting and always finite. Yet even with all our modern knowledge of science, we refuse to see ourselves the blip we really are.

Quote:Care to share some examples of people having their hard-drives formatted after some gnarly brain damage? If by 'hard-drives' formatted, you are implying a mind that is completely erased, that not what I said. I said personality reset. There are plenty of examples from medical literature. One of the first studied was Phineas P. Gage. But I have an example in my own family. My uncle's second wife had a concussion that caused bleeding in her frontal lobe. This damage caused her personality to completely change to the point where she is not the same person. Some of the most interesting cases involve corpus callosotomy surgery for treating epilepsy. This is where the corpus callosum is cut between the 2 hemispheres of the brain. Each hemisphere will have completely different personalities. There's even cases where one hemi is a theist, the other an atheist. What will happen to a person with this condition after they die? You'd believe if you just opened your heart" is a terrible argument for religion. It's basically saying, "If you bias yourself enough, you can convince yourself that this is true." If religion were true, people wouldn't need faith to believe it -- it would be supported by good evidence. RE: What Do You Believe Will Happen To You Once You Die?

My initial response expressed the idea that, although the mind deteriorates with the brain, it doesn't follow that the mind will totally disappear with the brain. But I think we can take for granted that whatever would remain of the "mind" (if you can still call it that) would not be you. It would suffer from every brain deficit possible: no memory (amnesia), no sensory awareness (blind, deaf, numb), no emotion (sociopathy, girl with no fear, etc.), possible partitioning (commissurotomy). In short, it won't be you unless your brain is somehow recreated in the future or some other dimension. Some Jews actually don't believe in an immediate after-life. They believe your body will be resurrected after the apocalypse for the new Jerusalem or something like that.
There is no "mind" there is just the brain in motion. The combo of our brain and motion is what we falsely call "mind" and what theists stupidly call "soul". Using the word "mind" to me is as stupid as conflating the word "speed" as being as material as the car itself while in motion. "Mind" to me is simply an abstract description of the uniqueness of our personalities. At best one could say "mind" is merely the uniqueness of the way our car speeds. I avoid the word "mind" like the plague because even liberals and atheists woo it up far too much for my taste.
