When we die, the brain is not merely damaged but completely destroyed. What is your basis of hope that we will somehow retain the memories we had in life without the brain when we have such trouble accessing them when the brain is damaged? IMHO, this all but rules out any afterlife scenario except perhaps reincarnation, and even then the person I was will be gone.

There is something after we die. But we need to define what. They mock you because that's all they have. That is independent of belief. Now lets talk about defining something none of us know with stuff most of us know. It is not about right and wrong. It is only about using what we know to talk about what we don't know. It's basically saying, "If you bias yourself enough, you can convince yourself that this is true." If religion were true, people wouldn't need faith to believe it -- it would be supported by good evidence. 
There is no evidence that an after life exists or doesn't but why live your life as if you "know" there is one? That doesn't make sense.
I didn't believe in heaven/hell even as a Christian. 
Same thing as when I fall sleep and fail to dream.
