It's also dodgy in that it fails to account for where the star will be when the spacecraft arrives. Stars move and shit.

At that timescale its probably a good idea to make sure your target will still exist when you get there as well.

The fastest spacecraft is the Voyager-1 goes in the speed of 17.05 km/s . Its speed changes whenever it goes near planets .

My calculations are very accurate and based on that speed and neglecting the small changes.

I'm neglecting all that in my calculation. Things can get really complicated, if we take in account all the small variables and changes .

Yeah, well, since our star will go boom in 5 billion years, taking 10 billion years to get there will probably take too long. Even if we froze ourselves so we wouldn't have to worry about evolutionary changes to the descendents of the original crew.

Even if the planet and star was still good, which it wouldn't be, what the fuck could have evolved on the planet by then?

All the different variables are endless. I can think of four more for every one I type out.

Actually, it would only take on the order of 10e7 years. He is off by three orders of magnitude.

But I shall not fault his arithmetic. After all, bible is infallible and still got the age of earth wrong by 6 orders of magnitude.

The Earth will be a dead planet far, far sooner than that. Probably less than 600 million years.

Whenever something like this comes up in the news, I get so excited, but quickly become dispirited when I realize there's about a zero chance that we'll ever find out if life is there and what it's like. Hmmm. :/
